Although we haven't posted much lately, we certainly haven't been bored! In the last 4-5 weeks we've had 4 snow storms, lost power 3 times, and the days it wasn't snowing it was raining! In the midst of all this, our newest chicken additions arrived in the mail. Thankfully we have a woodstove, so when the power goes out we can keep them warm with heated bricks! It has been so cold (highs never exceeding 42) that the chicks are still in the house--they are driving me crazy! This week we have sun in the forecast, so the chicks will promptly be moving out to the greenhouse with a heatlamp for nights.

These are a new variety called Red Star. They are a hybrid cross between white Leghorn and Rhode Island Red. This breed are supposed to be excellent layers and lay through the cold of winter. We sell our surplus eggs to neighbors, so I decided to increase our flock a bit this year. Our hens from last year are back up to full production after the winter break and we are enjoying plenty of lovely, fresh eggs!
